User interface
We evaluated the interfaces based on the needs of the average user, who may have little (if any) experience in file recovery. For first-time users, a wizard-oriented interface that walks you through the process is highly preferable. As users become more familiar with the program, the ability to specify advanced settings for file recovery can be very valuable.

Restorer Ultimate has a very good wizard interface allowing more advanced users to specify a wide range of advanced file recovery parameters. Only Active@ UNDELETE 12 has a non-wizard interface which may be confusing for novices, although its Professional version has a wizard interface. Since our last review: R-Undelete has now a completely new user interface, the best among the other programs. Seagate Recovery Suite (when compared with Seagate File Recovery tested in 2016) now has a new and more convenient and optimized user interface. |

User interface
Product | Rating | Test Results | |
---|---|---|---|
Restorer Ultimate | 6.0 | The best wizard interface among all tested programs. Logically straightforward and comprehensible, even for an inexperienced user. At the same time, it allows the more advanced user to tweak the parameters for more powerful file recovery—almost matches pro software in terms of advanced features. | |
R-Undelete | 5.0 | Just as user-friendly and intuitive as Restorer Ultimate, yet supports fewer advanced recovery parameters. | |
MiniTool Power Data Recovery | 4.0 | A good wizard interface, but only a few data recovery parameters can be specified. | |
Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Home | 4.0 | A good wizard interface, but only a few data recovery parameters can be specified. | |
EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard | 4.0 | A good wizard interface but only allows the user to specify a handful of parameters. Sufficient for basic recovery tasks, but limited in terms of advanced data recovery. | |
Handy Recovery | 3.0 | A standard, non-wizard user interface, suitable for more advanced users only. | |
As the average user of such programs is supposed to be a person with little (if any) experience in file recovery, it is necessary for the program to guide the user through the entire process step-by-step. Thus, a wizard-based interface is the preferable default mode of operation. However, the ability to switch to an “advanced” mode or individually specify additional parameters make for a more versatile (and therefore valuable) data recovery tool. |
